David Wright 'chomping at the bit' to return to Mets

Published May. 19, 2015 6:18 a.m. ET

New York Mets third baseman is anxious to return to the team after suffering a setback in his injury rehab that's rendered him absent from the team for over a month.

"He's chomping at the bit," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "But today is the first day he was actually back on the field for any amount of work. … Until he's back cleared for all baseball activity, it's hard to put a schedule together."

Wright was originally sent to the disabled list with a hamstring injury, but a flare-up in his back has extended his rehabilitation.

"The hamstring is probably a non-factor at this point," Alderson said. "What's maybe held him up over the last couple of days is his back and a desire by the doctors to have him work through a series of exercises."
