D-backs' Goldschmidt lands extension

The Diamondbacks and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt have agreed to a five-year, $32 million contract extension, a source confirmed Friday.

The extension runs from 2014-18 with an option for 2019 and buys out arbitration years and at least one year of potential free agency.

Goldschmidt, 25, hit .286 with 20 home runs and drove in 82 runs in 145 games last year, his first full season in the majors. He also stole 18 bases and posted an OPS of .850.

“This is the only place I wanted to be so I’m thrilled to know that I will be here long-term,” said Goldschmidt. “I can’t wait for the season to start, and I hope that we can bring another World Championship to the fans of Arizona.”

The agreement was first reported by Jim Bowden of ESPN.
