Cubs prospect Soler homers in his first major-league at-bat

Outfielder Jorge Soler homered in his first big-league at-bat on Wednesday night off Cincinnati's Mat Latos, a noteworthy debut for the Cubs' 22-year-old prospect.

Soler connected on a 2-1 pitch from Latos in the second inning, hitting the ball onto the netting above the Reds bullpen in center field. He's the first Cubs player to homer in his first at-bat in the majors since Starlin Castro connected off Homer Bailey in Cincinnati on May 7, 2010.

The Cuban signed a nine-year, $30 million contract last season. He was promoted before the game on Wednesday, part of Chicago's youth movement. Soler, who has decided to keep his No. 68 in the majors, is the eighth Cubs player to make his debut this season. 

The Cubs put outfielders Ryan Sweeney and Justin Ruggiano on the 15-day disabled list before the second game of their series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Sweeney had to leave the Cubs' 3-0 victory on Tuesday with a pulled hamstring. Ruggiano hadn't played since last week because of a sore left ankle.

The Cubs also recalled infielder Logan Watkins from Iowa, a day after he was optioned down.
