Coming off no-hitter, Santana yields early single

Published Aug. 2, 2011 11:44 p.m. ET

No no-hit drama for Ervin Santana this time.

After pitching the first solo no-hitter for the Angels since 1984 in his previous start, Santana gave up a leadoff single in the second inning Tuesday night to Minnesota's Jason Kubel.

Johnny Vander Meer remains the only pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters in major league history. He did it in 1938 for Cincinnati.

Santana threw his no-hitter last Wednesday at Cleveland, leading Los Angeles to a 3-1 win.

Kubel singled cleanly past first baseman Mark Trumbo on Santana's 20th pitch of the game.
