Colorado Rockies turning to the bullpen early and often

Published Apr. 22, 2015 5:51 p.m. ET

Quality pitching seems to always be a problem for the Colorado Rockies. This year, the bullpen actually seems to be a strength. However, that strength might start to get worn down if the starters don’t go deeper into games.

Last year, starting pitchers for the Rockies turned in the fewest innings in all of baseball. So far this year the starters have turned in 71 2/3 innings pitched, which is not last, but still the 6th-fewest in the majors. Only one starter has pitched more than six innings -- that was Kyle Kendrick with seven on Opening Day. Consequently, the bullpen has had to pitch 52 1/3 innings thus far which is the third-most in baseball.
