Closer Jeurys Familia approaching Mets history
Jeurys Familia wasn't expected to be the New York Mets' closer this season, nonetheless etch his name in franchise history in the role.
ESPN.com notes that Familia is two saves away from tying Armando Benitez for the most saves in a single season in the Mets' 63-year history.
With his 41st save of the season on Monday, Familia has moved up to second on the list.
The top-10 most saves in a single season in Mets history are as follows:
1. Benitez (43, 2001)
t-2. Familia (41, 2015)
t-2. Benitez (41, 2000)
4. Billy Wagner (40, 2006)
5. Julio Franco (38, 1998)
6. Franco (36, 1997)
7. Francisco Rodriguez (35, 2009)
8. Wagner (34, 2007)
t-9. Benitez (33, 2002)
t-9. Franco (33, 1990)By that list, one might be given the impression that Benitez is the Mets' all-time saves leader, but it is indeed Franco who holds that distinction with 276 saves, mainly due to the mere fact that Franco pitched for the Mets for 14 seasons.Benitez, on the other hand, amassed 160 saves, which slots him second on the Mets' all-time list, in four-plus seasons at an 86-percent success rate.
If Familia can sustain the elite level he's established this season, he has a chance to surpass Benitez on the Mets' career saves list as well.
Among all the seasons on the above list, the 25-year-old righty has maintained the lowest ERA (1.63) and WHIP (0.95) this season out of any of the Mets' famed closers.
