Clayton Kershaw reaches 100 wins, but can he reach 300?

Now that Clayton Kershaw has reached 100 wins for his career, some people might be looking ahead to the possibility of him reaching the elite 300-win club. Although it’s becoming rarer for pitchers to reach that milestone, he’s the second-youngest active pitcher to reach the 100-win plateau at 27 years, 57 days.

Fansided blog Call to the Bullpen handicaps his chances of reaching 300 as follows:

“Kershaw has earned a victory in 46.1% of his 217 starts to date. Spotting him 30 starts a season, he would average about 14 wins a year at that rate. … Maintaining that tempo, he would potentially reach win #300 in approximately 14 seasons’ time, at age 41.”

Kershaw has proven to be durable, so barring any serious injuries, averaging 14 wins per season until he’s 41 seems plausible. Randy Johnson was the last pitcher to reach 300 wins. The dominant lefty did so in 2009.
