Cervelli stepping up for Pirates
Francisco Cervelli entered the 2015 season on a team team with a new role.
For the first time in his career, Cervelli was going to be asked to be the everyday starting catcher.
It was a role he wanted, he just had to make sure he produced and was ready for it.
So far, so good.
"He's looking to maximize opportunities, give us the best at-bat he can to work us down to the next guy in the lineup," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told Pirates.com. "He's done a very nice job with that."
Cervelli gets along well with the pitching staff and has been great behind the plate, but that's been far from his only contribution.
The catcher has also been one of the best offensive catcher's in the National League.
"I think he's always known what kind of hitter he's wanted to be. I think the freedom of health has helped that along. The continuity of play has helped that along," Hurdle said. "We're going to catch him. We're going to try not to overwork him, but use him as our main guy and have Chris [Stewart] complement him."
