Cashman: Jeter hysteria can end now
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that Derek Jeter's two home runs in Sunday's 12-5 win at Texas should silence the hysteria over his rough April.
Cashman said while he did not think the big day at the plate was something Jeter was desperate for, it would still have a positive effect.
"Do I think he personally needs it? No," Cashman said at the New York Yankees/New Era Pinstripe Bowl Charity Golf Tournament in Monroe Township, N.J.
"Do I think it changes the focus for a period of time? Absolutely. We've got about five guys in that lineup that are struggling. He's taking a lot of the questions, or has been for the first month, but in fairness we've had a little bit of an offensive epidemic. Although we're one of the better offensive clubs, we just haven't fired on all cylinders yet.
"I think his name has given other aspects of the offense some cover."
Cashman also said that even though the Yankees are in first place in the AL East, the best is yet to come.
"Everybody is trying to find their consistency groove," Cashman said. "We've had everyone, for the most part, go through their ups and downs.
"We've got a lot of talent and that talent, as long as it stays healthy, will carry us hopefully a long way."
For that reason, Cashman said he is not looking to make any alterations to his roster at the moment.
"There's no aspect of the club I'm worried about making changes on right now," he said. "I just think we're still trying to decipher what is real, what isn't real."
