Cardinals recall two pitchers

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Thursday that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez and left-hander Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis.

Martinez, who has been with the Cardinals twice already this season, will make his first start in Thursday's series finale with the Los Angeles Dodgers. While at Memphis, Martinez was 4-2 with a 1.76 ERA in 10 starts. With the Cardinals, Martinez has no record, but he has recorded 11 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

Freeman was 7-2 with a 2.95 ERA and two saves in 44 games at Memphis. He made 24 relief appearances for the Cardinals last season, going 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA.

To make room for Martinez and Freeman, St. Louis optioned right-handed pitcher Keith Butler and first baseman/outfielder Brock Peterson to Memphis.
