Cardinals ready for McGwire's coaching debut

Published Feb. 16, 2010 4:21 p.m. ET

Mark McGwire's No. 25 jersey is ready for duty again.

The most controversial batting instructor in the major leagues is due to arrive in Jupiter, Fla., late Tuesday. He could be on the field as early as Wednesday, the date for pitchers and catchers to report for St. Louis.

Second baseman Skip Schumaker is among a handful of Cardinals familiar with McGwire's passion for hitting, thanks to offseason workouts in California. The leadoff hitter has one complaint: He will no longer have McGwire's undivided attention.

Last month, McGwire ended more than a decade of denials and evasion by admitting that he used steroids and human growth hormone as he became a home run king.
