The St. Louis Cardinals activated Matt Holliday from the 15-day disabled list for their game against the Nationals on Thursday. Holliday, who had a left quadriceps injury, missed 13 games. Earlier in the season, he missed seven after an appendectomy.

Holliday was batting fourth and in left field for the Cardinals in the lineup for Thursday's game. He's hitting .342 with 6 home runs and 31 RBIs in 44 games.

St. Louis placed right-handed pitcher Eduardo Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder. The move is retroactive to June 13.

Sanchez is 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA and five saves in 25 games.
