Cano wanted $300 million deal

Robinson Cano asked for a $300 million deal from the New York Yankees "several months ago," trying to top Alex Rodriguez’s record $275 million deal, sources confirm to Ken Rosenthal.

“Out of respect to both parties, we have agreed all along with the Yankees not to comment publicly on discussions regarding Robinson’s contractual future," Brodie Van Wagenen, Cano's agent at CAA, said." I am abiding by that agreement and I will not confirm any discussions or offers or whether there have been offers by either side. As Robinson said (Wednesday), he hasn’t made any decisions on his future. Robinson is among the elite talents in the game and in the final few days of his contract, but he and I will continue to respect the process and our promise to not discuss specifics.”

Cano, who is in the final year of his deal, switched agents this year, opting to leave Scott Boras and be represented by Jay-Z’s firm Roc Nation.

The Yankees’ initial offer before the season is believed to be similar to David Wright’s contract (eight years, $138 million).

Cano is batting .315 with 27 homers and 106 RBI this season, leading the team in all three categories.
