Byrdak may need shoulder surgery

The New York Mets say left-hander Tim Byrdak has a torn anterior capsule in his shoulder, the same injury that forced teammate Johan Santana to miss more than a year.

The Mets said Monday in a release that surgery is a possibility for the lefty specialist. Byrdak leads the league with 56 appearances and 2-2 4.40 ERA in 30 2-3 innings. Byrdak has not pitched since Wednesday, when he complained of shoulder soreness.

Also, catcher Chris Johnson is day to day with a bruised right hand. He was hurt in Sunday's loss to the San Diego Padres.

Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis partially tore the plantar facia in his right foot on Friday night in a game with Triple-A Buffalo and will report to Port St. Lucie for rehabilitation. Nieuwenhuis batted .252 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 91 games for the Mets before his demotion.
