Broken bat hits Chamberlain in elbow

Joba Chamberlain’s long and occasionally bizarre injury history added a new chapter Thursday night — at the most inopportune time for the New York Yankees.

Chamberlain’s surgically repaired right elbow was hit by the head of Matt Wieters’ broken bat, on the Baltimore catcher’s leadoff single in the 12th inning of Game 4 of the American League Division Series.

Chamberlain tried to remain in the game, throwing three warm-up tosses in an attempt to convince manager Joe Girardi and head athletic trainer Steve Donohue, but the elbow appeared to swell and Donohue escorted him off the field. X-rays were negative.

Chamberlain missed the first four months of the season because of two injuries: Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow and a right ankle dislocation suffered in an off-the-field mishap.

Chamberlain, 27, has struggled to reclaim the success he enjoyed as a rookie in 2007, when he compiled a 0.38 ERA as a star reliever. He was part of a postseason controversy that year, when insects pestered him during a loss in Cleveland.
