Brewers hire Narron to replace Sveum

Johnny Narron was hired Monday as hitting coach of the Milwaukee Brewers to replace Dale Sveum, who became manager of the Chicago Cubs two weeks ago.

Narron had been assistant hitting coach of the Texas Rangers after serving three years as a special assignment coach.

The older brother of Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron, he spent four years in the Milwaukee organization as hitting coach at Rookie Helena (2003, 2006), manager at Helena (2004) and hitting coach at Class A Brevard County (2005).

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said that in addition to his formal role, Narron was ''part of the support network we'd put in place for Josh'' Hamilton, who rebounded from substance abuse problems to become the 2010 AL MVP. Texas had given Milwaukee permission to speak with Narron.

''We've been in touch with Josh - before and after the hiring - and will sit down to discuss the best way to move forward,'' Daniels said. ''We're confident we will continue to support Josh and all of our players as needed. In anticipation of losing Johnny, we had some discussion about this, but will be in better position to address that specifically once we've all put our heads together.''

Hamilton has started running as he recovers from sports hernia surgery on Nov. 11.

''Johnny is very talented and has helped me tremendously, both personally and professionally,'' Hamilton said. ''He is fulfilling a dream to be a major league batting coach, and I have told him previously I would never stand in his way from doing that. We will stay in touch.''
