Braves to hire Gonzalez as manager
Fredi Gonzalez has been hired as the Atlanta Braves' new manager and will be introduced at a news conference Thursday, according to multiple media reports.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the news was confirmed by two people familiar with the negotiations.
Gonzalez, 46, will succeed Bobby Cox, who retired after 29 seasons as a major-league manager, including 25 with the Braves.
Team officials would not comment on Cox's successor, the newspaper said. Cox is scheduled to have a press conference on Wednesday.
Gonzalez was fired as Florida Marlins manager in June. He had a 276-279 record in 3 1/2 seasons with the Marlins, who were 35-36 when he was dismissed.
The Sporting News named him Manager of the Year in 2008, when the Marlins finished 84-77 despite having the lowest payroll in the major leagues.
Gonzalez, a native of Havana, was the Braves' third-base coach from 2003-06, working under Cox. He came to the Braves organization as manager of Class AAA Richmond in 2002.
The Braves lost in the NLDS to the San Francisco Giants in Cox's final series.
