Braves OF Upton day to day after hit by pitch

Outfielder Justin Upton is day to day after being struck on left hand by a pitch during Atlanta's game against Cleveland.

Upton was plunked with a 92-mph fastball from Ubaldo Jimenez that rode into the hitter in the fifth inning with the Braves leading 3-0 Thursday night.

The training staff immediately ran out to check on Upton, who looked as though he would stay in the game. But he was escorted to the dugout for X-rays, which were negative. The team said he sustained a bruise.

The Braves already lost outfielder Jason Heyward in similar fashion. He needed surgery for a broken jaw after being struck by a pitch against the New York Mets, though Heyward hopes to return in time for the playoffs.
