Bradley baseball player dies of heart problem

Published Oct. 18, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

An autopsy has revealed that a Bradley University baseball player died of an undiagnosed heart condition.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll told the Peoria Journal Star that 21-year-old junior Phil Kaiser had a condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy that causes the heart's walls to thicken.

Kaiser died at a local hospital after being found unresponsive at his girlfriend's apartment about 2 a.m. Monday.

Ingersoll says Kaiser's condition caused his heart to stop after he experienced an irregular heart beat.

Kaiser is from the Chicago suburb of Berwyn and has played two seasons for the Bradley baseball team and was studying communications and advertising.
