Boston's Pedroia fouls ball off foot, leaves game

Boston's Dustin Pedroia fouled a ball off his left foot in the third inning of the team's 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Friday night and was removed from the game.

X-rays were negative but the Red Sox star was scheduled for more tests Saturday.

Pedroia was initially examined by an athletic trainer and checked on by manager Terry Francona, but finished the plate appearance to draw a leadoff walk from Jonathan Sanchez. Pedroia was then replaced at first by pinch-runner Mike Cameron.

``I'm sore. I'll get checked out and make sure we get to the bottom of everything,'' Pedroia said. ``It was pretty disappointing. I've never hit a ball there before. It was the inside of my foot. I usually hit my shin and not my foot. It just hurt. I told Tito (Francona) to just let me finish the at-bat and go from there.''

The injury affected Pedroia's walking afterward.

It was a tough blow for Boston, which arrived in the Bay Area at 4 a.m. after a 13-11, 10-inning win at Colorado on Thursday night. Pedroia went 5 for 5 with a career-high three home runs, including a go-ahead two-run drive in the 10th.

``He got whacked. He's really sore,'' Francona said. ``He was X-rayed and they didn't see a break but we'll get him examined more tomorrow. He's having a tough time putting weight on it.''
