Boras: 'I'm encouraged by Pittsburgh'
The culture has certainly changed in Pittsburgh, but if the Pirates want to continue that trend they need to start attracting some star free agents.
Winning will certainly help in that regard and the Pirates also need to keep some of their biggest starts in house, something agent Scott Boras is confident the organization can now do, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Boras represents Pedro Alvarez and Gerrit Cole and while he told the newspaper nothing is brewing with either player, his remarks were certainly favorable.
“I'm encouraged by Pittsburgh. The core is here. The management team is here,” Boras said the newspaper. “I just remember a conversation I had with Bob (Nutting) when he signed Gerrit and it was very clear that he wanted to (turn) a new leaf for this town. ... He wanted to do something different.”
Alvarez isn't a free agent until after the 2016 season and Cole isn't scheduled to hit the market until the 2019 season concludes, but if the Pirates can find a way to lock up both players, it would certainly be a good sign for the long-term health of the franchise.
“You have to remember, players like playing here. It's a beautiful ballpark,” Boras said. “(But) it's a competition. You have to compete in the draft, and you have to compete in free agency.”
