Blue Jays designate RHP Edgar Gonzalez

Published Apr. 12, 2013 11:31 p.m. ET

The Blue Jays designated right-hander Edgar Gonzalez for assignment and sent him to Triple-A Buffalo once he cleared waivers, creating room on the 25-man roster for outfielder Casper Wells.

The move was made before Friday night's game against the Kansas City Royals.

Wells was claimed off waivers from Seattle on Wednesday, and Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said that he'll be used primarily against left-handed pitchers.

He hit .228 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs for the Mariners last season.

Gibbons also said that third baseman Brett Lawrie is making progress with a strained left oblique muscle that's kept him out for more than a month. Lawrie played four innings and went 2 for 2 with a walk in an extended spring training game Thursday.
