Beane on Kazmir deal, A's future trade plans: 'We have to be realistic'

BY foxsports • July 24, 2015

After waffling for a while about whether to 'buy' or 'sell', the Oakland Athletics traded one of their valuable assets on Thursday, sending Scott Kazmir to the Houston Astros for a pair of prospects.

As the day went on, general manager Billy Beane spoke with the media regarding the decision to deal Kazmir and focus on the future.

As Beane told Joe Stiglich of CSN Bay Area, he considered his options for the club and realized it's probably wise to focus on the future of the A's rather than the 2015 club, which enters Friday 44-53 and mostly buried in the posteason picture: “We have to be realistic, and ultimately you don’t want to be sitting at the end of the year and have guys walk out the door and having to fill those holes (without getting something in return). It’s the dilemma of the job -- if you do it, when you do it. And ultimately, we felt this was the right time."

Beane added more, telling Stiglich that, "… When you make a trade with a guy like Scott at this time of year, there are some concessions you’re making, and understanding that the future is probably more important than the present.”

Beane also called in to the A's flagship radio station 95.7 the Game to discuss at length the trade and his mindset with the July 31 non-waiver deadline coming up quickly:
