Baylor may return for NLDS opener

The Arizona Diamondbacks were hopeful hitting coach Don Baylor, who was hospitalized overnight after fainting Friday morning, will rejoin the team Saturday for the playoffs opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Baylor, 62, was wheeled out of Milwaukee's Miller Park on a stretcher after he fainted in the clubhouse following breakfast. The Diamondbacks confirmed was taken to a local hospital for precautionary tests.

Team president and CEO Derrick Hall told FOX Sports Arizona that Baylor was kept in for observation, but added he was optimistic that he would be in uniform Saturday for Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said the earlier tests on Baylor were promising.

"One of our trainers told me the EKG (electrocardiogram) came back good," he told The Arizona Republic on Friday. "I think they're doing a CT scan. After those tests, we'll probably have more to say. Everything looks good as of now."

Towers said Baylor had just gotten up from eating in the clubhouse kitchen area when he began feeling disoriented and lightheaded. He said the team's physical therapist stopped Baylor from hitting the floor.

Baylor joined Arizona last October to serve as hitting coach under Kirk Gibson.

The former big league slugger, who won a World Series title as a player with the Minnesota Twins in 1987, managed the Colorado Rockies from 1993-1998 and the Chicago Cubs from 2000-2002.
