Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Box Score, Tragic News About Jose Fernandez
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves were on a seven game winning streak heading into this Saturday matchup with the Miami Marlins. Unfortunately, we couldn’t continue that streak, but Freddie Freeman did continue his remarkable hitting streak to 28 games. FF5 is having an insane second half of 2016 and should be making his way into at least the top five in NL MVP voting. Aaron Blair started for the Braves on Saturday, but couldn’t make it out of the 4th inning. He gave up six hits, five runs and three walks. Blair should get one more start in the 2016 season and it’s looking like it will be against the Detroit Tigers during the Braves final series at Turner Field. Marlins star Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident at 24
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Stunning, shocking, devastating…all of the above…about the news about Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez. His 30th start of 2016 was originally schedule to be today, Sunday, but was pushed back to Monday because of his heavy workload this year. Marlins manager Don Mattingly said that if the Marlins were eliminated from playoff contention, they would not pitch Fernandez again this year. In his first full season back from a 2014 Tommy John surgery, the right-hander was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA. So much hope and promise from this young kid, this news was definitely tough to wake up to today.
Miami Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez was one of three people who died in a boating accident in Miami Beach early Sunday morning.
He was 24.
“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
Sickening news: Source confirms that #Marlins‘ Jose Fernandez was killed in boating accident. Statement coming from club shortly.

Cubs bring retiring catcher Ross to tears with Wrigley tribute
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Former Atlanta Braves catcher, David Ross, is retiring at the end of this season and the Cubs put together a great farewell video. They played this video on the boards prior to the Friday opener with the Cardinals. The 39-year-old catcher has had a 15 year MLB career and played four years with the Braves. Atlanta was his longest tenure with a team as he was with us from 2009 to 2012. A great leader on and off the field, I still wish the Braves would have signed him back when they had the chance. He won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2013 and has a very good chance at winning another one this year with the Cubs. With Jason Heyward and Ross, I think we have to cheer for the Cubs heading into October, right?
The Cubs surprised David Ross with a touching video tribute before Friday’s series-opener against the Cardinals that brought the retiring catcher (and plenty of fans who’ve seen it) to tears.
Even though he’s only been with the Cubs for two seasons, Ross is admired by players and fans alike for his sense of humor and leadership in the dugout. Ross started his career with L.A. Dodgers in 2002, and since then has played with several teams including Atlanta Braves and the Boston Red Sox when they won the World Series in 2013. He’s announced this will be his last year in the MLB.
“Grandpa Rossy” has embraced his place as an elder member of the Cubs, like in this commercial where he encouraged fans to text using a rotary phone.
To an amazing teammate and an even better person.
Congratulations, @D_Ross3! #YearLongRetirementParty pic.twitter.com/9krkBkA2n8
