Astros reliever Byrdak to get injection for back

Published May. 13, 2010 12:45 a.m. ET

Astros reliever Tim Byrdak was examined in Houston and will receive an injection to relieve irritation in a lower back disk on Friday.

The left-hander flew back to Houston Wednesday to have the injury checked by team medical personnel. He is scheduled to rejoin the team later Friday in San Francisco but is not expected to be ready when he's eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on May 19.

The Astros had been treating Byrdak for a high hamstring injury but the pitcher has complained of radiating pain down the sciatic nerve.

Byrdak has a 5.23 ERA in 13 games. Last year, he led the team with 76 relief appearances, holding batters to a .178 average.
