A's activate, option Griffin - Doolittle set to miss more time

Published Jun. 14, 2015 1:59 a.m. ET

On Saturday, the Oakland Athletics activated right-hander A.J. Griffin from the 60-day disabled list and reliever Sean Doolittle was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day D.L.

Griffin, returning from 2014 Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

A's manager Bob Melvin told Joe Stiglich of CSN Bay Area that the club anticipates Griffin rejoining the starting rotation once he's able to continue building up his velocity and pitch count. Melvin added, "We’re moving him along. He’s not ready to be here right now. It’s going to take him some time to get to where we’re looking to potentially bring him up here.”

Stiglich notes that Griffin joins Sean Nolin, Chris Bassitt and Barry Zito as pitchers currently with Triple-A Nashville that could be viable options to replace a current starter (such as Scott Kazmir) should any trades materialize in the next month or so.

As for Doolittle, the shoulder strain he suffered shortly after making his 2015 debut last month is serious enough to keep him out of duty for the forseeable future (something G.M. Billy Beane alluded to in a recent radio chat).
