Arrieta's no-hit bid for Cubs broken up in 8th

Published Sep. 16, 2014 9:46 p.m. ET

CHICAGO (AP) Brandon Phillips has doubled with one out in the eighth inning for Cincinnati's first hit off Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta.

Phillips drove an 0-2 pitch to deep left-center, just beyond the desperate dive of center fielder Matt Szczur on the Wrigley Field warning track.

The only other baserunner Arrieta has allowed came on a leadoff walk in the fourth to Billy Hamilton, who was caught stealing on the next pitch.

The right-hander has struck out 11 in eight innings. Chicago leads 7-0 after chasing Reds ace Johnny Cueto in the sixth.

Arrieta was trying to throw the first no-hitter at Wrigley Field since Milt Pappas blanked the San Diego Padres 8-0 on Sept. 2, 1972.
