Angels trade Santana to Royals

The Royals, moving quickly to bolster their rotation, acquired right-hander Ervin Santana from the Angels on Wednesday.

The Angels needed to decide by Wednesday whether to exercise Santana's $13 million option for 2013.

The Royals presumably will pick up that option. It is not yet known how much cash the Angels are including in the deal to cover part of Santana's salary.

"We're proud to have him, and he certainly fits with what we're doing in 2013," Royals general manager Dayton Moore told the Associated Press.

The Royals are sending left-hander Brandon Sisk to the Angels. Sisk, 27, spent last season as a reliever at Triple A, posting a 2.54 ERA in 50 games. He also finished with eight saves.

Santana, who turns 30 on Dec. 12, was 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA and allowed a major league leading 39 home runs. During his eight-year career — all with the Angels — Santana was 96-80 with a 4.33 ERA and started at least 23 games each season.

He made the AL All-Star team in 2008, a season which he went 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA, while striking out a career-high 214 batters. In 2010, Santana finished 17-10 with a 3.92 ERA. He threw a no-hitter in 2011.

"I have to realize that this is a business," Santana told the Associated Press, citing Kaufman Stadium as one of his favorites in the majors. "They trade me, and I just have to accept it and move on. It's going to be hard because I've known my teammates for a long time, but now I'm going to have new teammates. I can't wait to meet them in person and hang out."

The Angels also have been trying to trade right-hander Dan Haren, who is in a similar contractual position to Santana.

The deadline for the team to decide on Haren's $15.5 million option for 2013 is Friday.

Haren, 32, was 12-13 with a 4.33 ERA last season, suffered from lower back tightness and showed a decline in fastball velocity.
