Angels RHP Garrett Richards injured in 1st inning

Published Aug. 16, 2011 3:40 a.m. ET

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Garrett Richards left his second major league start Monday night after injuring a muscle near his groin.

Richards favored his right leg after pushing off the rubber on a pitch to Texas' Nelson Cruz in the first inning. The Angels said Richards strained a muscle on his right side.

The Angels already trailed Texas 1-0 after Ian Kinsler doubled and scored on Elvis Andrus' groundout. Richards threw just 19 pitches before leaving, giving up two hits and an unearned run.

Richards has gone 12-2 at Double-A Arkansas this season, but the hard-throwing prospect lost his major league debut last week at Yankee Stadium, giving up six hits and six runs in five innings. Los Angeles recalled Richards last week to replace struggling Joel Pineiro in the rotation.
