White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper didn't sound too concerned after Bartolo Colon and Jose Contreras each pitched four rocky innings Monday. "Results are not important down here," he said after Chicago's 13-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. "We're trying to get these guys ready in a short time period." Both Colon and Contreras are coming off serious injuries. Contreras is ahead of schedule after rupturing his left Achilles' tendon last August. Colon is coming off offseason surgery to clean up some bone chips in his right elbow. And Cooper said he expects both veterans to be in the rotation when the regular season starts. Colon allowed seven runs and 11 hits against his former team. Contreras gave up six runs and seven hits. Vladimir Guerrero drove in four runs and Kendry Morales had three hits and three RBIs for the Angels. Gary Matthews Jr. went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Mike Napoli and Erick Aybar homered. Napoli was behind the plate for the second straight game after being limited early in camp as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. "It's a first step, but there is still work that needs to be done," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Tomorrow, if he comes out and does his long tosses, we'll get a read on how he feels and if he can catch. ... We'll evaluate him to see if he'll be ready for opening day." Jered Weaver gave up three runs, one earned, and five hits in six innings for the Angels. He struck one and walked two. Notes: The White Sox sent RHPs Lance Broadway, Jack Egbert and Jeff Marquez to Triple-A Charlotte and reassigned INF/OF Josh Kroeger and LHP Randy Williams to their minor league camp. They also placed INF Jayson Nix on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to March 27) with a strained right quadriceps. ... The White Sox are expected to cut Jerry Owens on Wednesday. Owens entered camp for the third straight season as the favorite to win the starting center-field job. "I'm disappointed," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We handed him the job three years in a row." ... Guillen said RHP Mike MacDougal made the team. MacDougal has a 3.75 ERA over 12 spring innings with 19 strikeouts. "I think he threw the ball well when he had to," Guillen said. "He really stepped it up the last four or five outings to get the job." ... Angels LHP Joe Saunders worked 6 1-3 innings in a minor league game, allowing five runs and 10 hits.
