Alex Guerrero discusses new Dodger Hector Olivera
Nobody in the United States may know the Dodgers' newest Cuban-import, Hector Olivera, as well as current Dodger Alex Guerrero. According to Mark Saxon of ESPN LA, Guerrero said he has known Olivera for years and that the two were the best second basemen in Cuba. He also complimented him on his hitting:
"He's a good hitter, hits for average. I would say he should hit 12 to 18 home runs a year, in that range. He's versatile. Fast," Guerrero said in Spanish.
Though he adds, when prompted by Saxon, that he’s not quite as fast as teammate Yasiel Puig.
While Olivera is currently a second baseman, the Dodgers already have a pretty good one in Howie Kendrick. Guerrero, who was beat out by Dee Gordon last spring for that position, is now a third baseman/left fielder. Olivera might be forced to undergo a similar position change, but a surplus of productive Dodger infielders and outfielders (including Guerrero) make it unclear what position that would be.
Guerrero discussed Olivera’s potential to be versatile:
"We'll have to see," Guerrero said. "I think he's a very versatile ball player, but we'd have to see him here at the major league level. It's different.”
It’s been an interesting couple of years for Guerrero since being signed, so he can certainly attest to how different the majors are from Cuba.
