A-Rod hits 599th home run
The New York Yankees third baseman connected in the seventh inning Thursday night on an 0-2 pitch from Kansas City Royals reliever Robinson Tejeda.
The shot to right field cleared the fence by a couple of feet and gave the Yankees an insurance run, putting them up 6-4 in a back-and-forth game.
It was A-Rod's 16th home run this season and it gave him three RBIs in the game. The three-time AL MVP also blooped a two-run double in the first inning.
In the same game, shortstop Derek Jeter hit an inside-the-park home run in the third inning.
Jeter motored home for the second inside-the-park home run of his career, tying the game at 3. His first came on Aug. 2, 1996, his rookie season.
DeJesus remained down while left fielder Scott Podsednik retrieved the ball and threw it toward the infield. DeJesus was replaced by Rick Ankiel, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier Thursday.
The Royals said DeJesus sprained his right thumb and would miss the remainder of the four-game series.
