A.M. Wahoo's: No Such Thing as 3-1 Lead Karma

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Cleveland Indians lost the World Series after holding a 3-1 lead, but it is entirely different than what the Cleveland Cavaliers accomplished.

The past four months have been filled with jokes about the Golden State Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead. The Cleveland Indians just blew a 3-1 lead of their own.

Fans outside of Cleveland may assume this means the Indians are now set to face 3-1 jokes, but the situation is completely different.

The Warriors were heavy favorites in the 2016 NBA Finals against the Cavaliers. They set countless regular season records, had home-court advantage over the Cavaliers and were considered one of the best teams in NBA history.

The Indians were not picked by anyone to win the World Series, let alone make it past the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS. The pitching staff was decimated to the point where Corey Kluber made three starts in the World Series, ultimately running out of gas in Game 7.

So even though the Indians were up 3-1, the Cubs entered Game 5 with the advantage of having a deeper pitching staff, along with a better offense. It was just a matter of time before the best team in the regular season made a statement.

The Cubs were this year’s super team, while the Indians made an unforgettable run to the World Series. Losing three straight to end the season is tough, but it is not some sort of epic collapse.

As hard as it is to handle, the better team won this year’s World Series in one of the greatest games in World Series history. The Indians gave it all they had, and being one win away from a championship is a painful way to end the season, but it no way takes away from what the team accomplished.

The offseason is going to be one that begins with the lingering disappointment of the loss, but the optimism will make its way back in a few months. While we count down the days to Spring Training, let’s take a look at the news surrounding the Indians and the rest of the MLB in today’s edition of A.M. Wahoo’s.
