300-pound(ish) college pitcher Ancheff takes Internet by storm

Published May. 30, 2015 8:26 a.m. ET

If you saw Ben Ancheff tossing batting practice for his buddies in a local park, would you chuckle at the sight of such a large fellow on the mound? Perhaps crack an inappropriate joke? The St. Thomas University right-hander might be largest pitcher you will ever see.

But he’s a college athlete -- a darn, good one. And you probably aren’t.

Ancheff, a transfer from the University of Central Arkansas, is listed at 6-foot-2, 300 pounds on the Bobcats’ official website. That seems quite generous, as he is the same height as a former New England Patriots defensive tackle -- 325-pound Vince Wilfork -- and looks like he could take Wilfork in a chicken-wing eating contest.

Of course, the Internet exploded upon witnessing his greatness and girth.

Ancheff limited Lewis-Clark State to just one run in 4 1/3 innings on Friday night before he was removed because of an arm injury in the middle of an at-bat. He struck out five hitters.

Lewis-Clark State came back from down 7-3 in the sixth to beat St. Thomas and capture the NAIA World Series title.

And people give this MLB pitcher a hard time? Ancheff is the new sheriff in town.
