Vijay Singh tied for early lead at Waialae

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:50 p.m. ET

HONOLULU (AP) Vijay Singh opened with a 7-under 63 and a share of the early lead Thursday in the Sony Open, showing why at 52 he doesn't spend a lot of time with players his own age.

Singh played bogey-free in gorgeous weather and mild wind at Waialae. He finished with two birdies to join Ricky Barnes and Morgan Hoffmann atop the leaderboard among those who played in the morning.

Barnes, the former U.S. Amateur champion, now has gone 205 starts on the PGA Tour without winning. He had to go back to the Web.com Tour Finals to earn his card, but felt like a swing change is starting to take hold.

Jimmy Walker, going for his third straight victory in the Sony Open, played in the afternoon.
