Shark story? Jordan Spieth details epic fishing battle on Bahamas trip
Jordan Spieth has landed his share of trophies this year on the golf course, but he pulled in something with more teeth on a trip to the Bahamas.
While on vacation following his win at the U.S. Open, Spieth and some of his friends went out on a boat to go snorkeling and fishing. While trying to reel in a tuna for what Spieth said was close to an hour, the two-time major winner started fighting something a little more powerful.
"It was a big tuna, and then these little sharks were coming in trying to get a piece of it, and the captain was scaring them off banging on the boat and on the water, and all of a sudden (the line) just rips back down again," said Spieth. "I almost got pulled in. And it was so much heavier, and I was just like, wait, these fish must have seen the sharks and just tried to avoid them."
The 21-year-old would soon find out that he was wrong.
After taking a short bathroom break and letting the captain taking over during what he said was a two-and-a-half-hour fight, Spieth came back to land his prize.
"What surfaced was like a 12-foot long, 300-pound black tip shark that had eaten this tuna and then had hooked itself, so I guess I caught both in one because I got that shark," said Spieth. "It was a cool experience. I've never had something like that."
There was no room on the boat to pull the shark in, but Spieth still has his fish story to tell. And it's all his.
"A couple of my friends were like, I'll take over. I'm like: 'You bet your ass you're not taking over. This is my fish,' " said Spieth. "The competitive side of me, I didn't want to give up until I actually couldn't move my arm anymore and then just needed about five minutes of shaking it and came back. It was sore for a couple days, but I'm good now.
"I'm very, very much afraid of sharks. I don't like them. They're not cool. I do like Shark Week, though. I really enjoy Shark Week."
It's fortunate that Spieth's arm is feeling good after the fight, as he will tee it up Thursday at the John Deere Classic.
