Professional golfer Jim Thorpe was released from prison Monday, the Long Island Press reported.
Thorpe, 61, served just over nine months of a 12-month sentence after pleading guilty to failing to pay $1.6 million in income taxes from 2002 to 2004.
The golfer must serve two years of supervised release and complete 200 hours of community service, according to the Press.
The Press also reported Thorpe is expected to enter a halfway house and pay $2 million to the Internal Revenue Service, plus interest and penalties.
Thorpe won three PGA Tour events during the 1980s. He also chalked up 13 wins on the Champions Tour, which is for golfers aged 50 and older. Thorpe’s last victory came in Oct. 2007 at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Cybergolf.com reported Monday that Thorpe intends to return to the Champions Tour.
"He can start playing the minute he's able,” Champions Tour president Mike Stevens told Golfweek earlier this month. “Thorpie has always been a great personality -- great with fans and pro-am partners and sponsors.”
"I'm sure he'll be equally as good when he comes back,” he added. “We'll welcome him back with open arms."
