Report: McIlroy's relationship with Wozniacki 'a distraction'

Rory McIlroy abruptly broke off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki because the Northern Irishman's personal life was affecting his golf game, a Page Six item reports.

"It was a distraction," a source told the New York Post column. "Rory's game hasn't been as consistently good in the time he's been with Caroline. He was a young guy in love and was flying around the world to see her play in tournaments or meet up with her. He was missing practice rounds."

"When you have two players focused on being No. 1, it's a huge commitment to see each other, physically and emotionally," the source continued. "As tough as the decision to end the relationship might have been, it is wise to do it now rather than after they were married."

The golfer announced he and Wozniacki were calling off their wedding after a five-month engagement on Wednesday. A day later at the BMW PGA Championship, McIlroy shot one of his best rounds at Wentworth.
