Paul Lawrie in position to show '99 Claret Jug was no fluke

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Paul Lawrie is 36 holes away from putting to rest the myth that he didn't deserve to win the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie.

The Scotsman stands third at 8-under 136, two shots behind Dustin Johnson at the Old Course. Lawrie is one of two Scots among the top four. Marc Warren is tied for fourth at 137.

For 16 years, Lawrie has had to endure the slings and arrows for having walked off with the old Claret Jug. The script's an old and tired one. It goes like this: Lawrie won only because Jean Van de Velde threw the tournament into the Barry Burn.
