Olesen holds off Wood in Sicilian Open

April 1, 2012

Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark shot a final-round 69 to win the Sicilian Open by one shot, holding off England's Chris Wood who equaled the course record with an 8-under 64 on Sunday.

Olesen shot six birdies to finish with an overall 15-under 273 at Verdura Golf and Spa Resort for his first career victory on the European Tour.

Wood picked up five shots in his first five holes - including an eagle on the par-5 fourth - and tied for the lead when Olesen bogeyed after hitting a wild approach shot to the 13th green.

But the 22-year-old Olesen, who led by three shots overnight, recovered with a birdie on No. 14 and finished with four straight pars.

Olesen finished runner-up three times last year, his debut season on the European Tour.

''I hit a terrible approach to the green on 14,'' Olesen said. ''But I made a very, very difficult chip shot and that was definitely key to me winning the tournament.''

Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark (68) and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium (69) tied for third on 12-under after a round where conditions were much calmer than the strong Mediterranean gusts for the two previous days.

John Daly of the United States finished tied for 11th with seven others on 8-under 280.
