The 1984 Open is the one that stands out in the Great White Shark’s memory.
And it isn’t for the reasons one would expect.
Fuzzy Zoeller wound up winning the tournament in a playoff with Norman. However, what the Aussie great recalls is the “camaraderie” that existed between the players while in the midst of battle for the great championship.
We showed in the highest and most intense time of playing a sport that you can do a lighthearted approach to it,” Norman told FOX Sports colleague Holly Sonders recently.
Norman recalled making a long putt on the 72nd hole that led to Zoeller who was playing behind that group to wave his towel as if to concede.
However, it was not to be as Zoeller shot a 67 in the playoff to win the title.
“It changed my perspective on how I looked at the sport,” Norman said. “I realized it was just a game and we had fun doing it.
