McIlroy has to win big in match play to make Pacquiao-Mayweather bout

Rory McIlroy, a boxing fan of some renown, procured himself one of the most sought-after tickets in recent sports history: Seats at the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather bout in Las Vegas. The problem is the golfer may not be able to make it as he is experiencing issues that happen more often to regular folks, not millionaire golfers:
His dumb job is getting in the way.
McIlroy is tentatively slated to be competing in a quarterfinal match at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship in San Francisco on Saturday. The conflict arises as his match should be wrapping up pretty close to the time the boxers will meet in the middle of the ring before the first round bell sounds.
“It never happened, so sort of waiting five years for this to happen,” McIlroy said, via Devil Ball Golf. “I always said if these two guys fought each other, I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to go. Luckily, we’re somewhere close, and hopefully I’m still part of this tournament at that time, but it just wasn’t an opportunity that I was going to miss.”
The fight is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. PST, which means that the only way McIlroy can be assured he’ll be seated — in presumably a pretty fantastic location — inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena is to go out and lay a boxing-inspired, match play beat-down on his unknown opponent, something akin to an early-round TKO in sweet science terms.
“Nothing that a few quick birdies won’t change if I try and win 7 and 6,” McIlroy said, via the New York Post. “If the fight starts at maybe 10 o’clock like they usually do, then it should be OK.”
McIlroy of course is a wee bit off when it comes to the actual time of the fight, but the luxuries afforded to the upper crust the likes of McIlroy is he can avoid flying commercial by taking advantage of the speed and convenience a private jet can afford, a quick flight that will get him from San Fran to Vegas tout de suite.
