Golf Tip: Chipping with a Hybrid
Today’s golf tip will help you get the most out of your hybrid.
Today’s golf tip is all about making the most of every club in your bag. When lying just off the green, consider using a hybrid to chip on. The beauty of this shot is that you can make a putting stroke with the hybrid — setup, stance and all.
The small hybrid head can easily get through the grass, and the simplicity of your putting stroke will make for a more consistent shot than a standard approach to chipping. If the lie is fairly “nested,” you can still put the ball back behind the middle of your feet with your hands slightly forward. Making a putting stroke from this setup will even further minimize the amount of grass interfering with ball contact.

It only takes about five minutes of practice to gain a reasonable touch with this shot. If you have been chunking shots or skulling the ball over the green from short distances, you should definitely give this approach a try. After getting some practice, hit 10 chips with a hybrid and 10 chips with your wedge or other iron, and I bet you’ll be more pleased with the former. Any time you can use a putting stroke from just off the green, you will be more likely to lock up a lower score!
I’ve been having my high school golf teams use this shot more and more. There’s definitely been a reduction in chunked shots and skulled shots that run over the green. You are in the rough, but just off the green. You deserve a low score. The use of a hybrid in this situation will preserve that par or bogey, so you can say goodbye to the doubles and triples!
