Gleeson sets record, wins Indian Open
David Gleeson shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to win the Indian Open, his third career title on the Asian Tour, by three strokes over local favorite Chiragh Kumar on Sunday.
The 27-year-old Taipei-based Australian was 4 under after five holes and made 13 consecutive pars in the final round to finish with a tournament record 20-under 268. His round included an eagle on the par-4 third when he chipped in from 140 yards.
Kumar shot a final-round 70 for a career-best finish that also secured an Asian Tour card for 2012.
Ross Bain of Scotland and Lu Wei-Chih of Taipei, winner of last week's Yeangder TPC, shot matching 67s to share third place on 272.
''Once I made that eagle I started playing more conservatively. It is unbelievable to win again. My victories have been sporadic and hopefully this win will change that,'' said Gleeson, whose victory ended a three-year title drought.
Kumar, who led his home open at the halfway stage, was satisfied with his second place.
''Imagine leading my national open, a tournament that every Indian kid who plays golf wants to win. That was the best bit for me this week,'' Kumar said.
''If at the start of the week somebody had said I would finish second, I would gladly taken it,'' he said after sinking a clutch 12-foot putt on the final hole to finish in sole possession second place.
For Gleeson the victory completed his turnaround after he started the season with five straight missed cuts and secured his Asian Tour card through 2013.
Thailand's Chapchai Nirat (67) finished fifth with a 274, one ahead of compatriot Boonchu Ruangkit (66).
Bolstered by home support, Indian duo Himmat Rai (68) and SSP Chowrasia (69) finished joint seventh on 276.
