Fowler likely to play Australian Open
Rickie Fowler, the 2010 PGA Tour rookie of the year, is understood to be on the verge of agreeing to join superstar Tiger Woods at the Australian Open in Sydney from November 10-13, The (Sydney) Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.
The brash youngster has the talent and wit to become golf's next global superstar — and conquering Australia would be a further step in that direction.
It is understood that should Fowler get the green light for the Presidents Cup, he will start his preparation at The Lakes in Sydney at the Australian Open before joining the US team in Melbourne for the teams event.
The 22-year-old would also likely play the Australian PGA at Coolum the week following — another coup in the PGA's centenary year.
Fowler can qualify automatically by placing second or better at this weekend's BMW Championship at Cog Hill but said he was trying not to focus on the lure of the Presidents Cup and the big money on offer in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
"There's a lot of things that can come out of this week, but for the most part I've just got to go play golf, play well and worry about that first," Fowler said.
The likely inclusion of Fowler gives the Australian Open its strongest field in decades. Adam Scott, defending champion Geoff Ogilvy and Jason Day lead the Australian charge, with long-hitting sensations Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson among a host of big international names.
