Matt Fitzpatrick advanced to the final of the U.S. Amateur on Saturday with a 2-and-1 victory over Corey Conners at The Country Club.
Fitzpatrick could become the first English champion of the tournament since Harold Hilton in 1911. He will play Oliver Goss, who earned a 2-up victory over fellow Australian Brady Watt.
Fitzpatrick, who will be a freshman at Northwestern this fall, fell behind by two after four holes but turned it around with birdies on Nos. 6, 8 and 10. Conners, of Canada, was down two before a birdie on the par-3 16th hole. But the match ended after he hit into the famous Vardon bunker on the par-4 17th and could only make par.
The final is 36 holes of match play on Sunday.
