Johan Edfors of Sweden shot an 8-under 64 Friday to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Spanish Open.
The 34-year-old Edfors made nine birdies to go with a bogey on the 17th for a 10-under 134 total. Mark Foster of England (66) and Sebi Garcia of Spain (67) shared second.
Edfors finished fourth at the China Open two weeks ago and is hoping another strong performance will put him on course for making the European Ryder Cup team. He was left off in 2006 by then captain Ian Woosnam despite winning three tournaments and finishing 10th on the European money list.
"The Ryder Cup this year is now well within my sights,'' said Edfors, whose last European Tour win was the 2006 Scottish Open. "I now think I can get into the team. I could win three tournaments in a row and that's my goal this summer.''
Garcia, a regular on the local Spanish PGA tour who only got a late sponsor's invitation to play in the tournament, made five birdies on his last seven holes to surge through the field.
Foster had seven birdies in his 66 and credited borrowed caddie Janet Squire - who normally works for Jeev Milkha Singh of India - for his strong play.
"She did a great job,'' Foster said. "It helped me conserve my energy, which paid dividends.''
First-round leader Ricardo Gonzalez barely made the cut after shooting a 79 following his 65 on Thursday. Gonzalez dropped four shots on his first 10 holes and added a double bogey on the 14th in a round that didn't include a birdie.
