Allenby returns to Sony Open

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:09 p.m. ET

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) Robert Allenby is returning to the Sony Open and hopes to put behind him a bizarre incident that marred last season.

Allenby still doesn't know what happened the night after he missed the cut. He originally said he was robbed, beaten and dumped in a park. The story gained traction because of a photo of his bloodied forehead.

He later said he was repeating what homeless people told him in the park where he was found. A man charged with using his credit cards was sentenced in August to five years. Allenby suspects he was drugged because he has no memory of a three-hour window.

Honolulu police said a published report that he was in a strip club was not true.
