SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Lewis Powell has been hired as the new tight ends coach at Utah, the school announced Tuesday.
Powell served as the defensive line coach for Hawaii the last two seasons after being an administrative assistant for the Utes in 2011 and a graduate assistant from 2009-10. He helped turn Beau Yap and Paipai Falemalu into all-Mountain West Conference defensive linemen the last two seasons.
Powell returns to his alma mater, where he played on the defensive line and was named the defensive player of the game in the 2003 Liberty Bowl. He played three years in the Arena Football League before returning to Utah as a graduate assistant in 2009.
